Innovation is a guiding principle and an active concept of research and development in both Boston and the cable industry. But where does it live? Does it need a physical space and community to foster competition and productivity?

Recently, my son, who will attend college in the fall to study computer science, called me down to his basement lair to show me the new interface offered by the Xbox console.

With TBS superstar Conan O’Brien being interviewed by CNN’s Piers Morgan, we have quite the growing list of speakers for The Cable Show 2012. Our General Sessions have the top names from sports, entertainment, business and politics represented in Boston.

In November of last year, the U.S. cable industry announced an initiative to improve the energy efficiency of cable set-top boxes. A major part of this initiative was the launch of a new facility within CableLabs – cable’s R&D consortium – that will focus on initiatives to improve energy efficiency, called CableLabs – Energy Lab.

In the past few weeks, this blog has addressed the issue of encryption of cable’s basic programming tier. We’ve pointed out that such encryption would reduce the need for technicians to visit customers’ homes for installations and disconnections.
