The freedom of speech is America’s favorite freedom and most important right, by a wide margin, according to the annual State of the First Amendment survey. We celebrate this right this week during Free Speech Week, October 21-27, with the help of our partners and member companies, including The Media Institute, MPAA, and NAB, and various universities and colleges. There are many events going on throughout the week as these partners honor free speech in unique ways.
We’re really excited to announce and share the winners of The Freedom of Speech PSA contest, a particularly special part of the Free Speech Week celebration. This was a national competition for college communication students presented by the NAB Education Foundation (NABEF), the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) and sponsored by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Over 200 submissions were received from across the country! The winning 30-second TV spots were recognized at the Society of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ) annual conference this past August and are below for your enjoyment:
Sasha Ribowsky and Eric Sowalskie, State University of New York at New Paltz, New Paltz, N.Y.
Kenneth Bordes-Hollon, Brooklyn College, New York, N.Y.
Scott Eickschen, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Moorhead, Minn.
