Targeting Funds to Help Rural Communities Connect

As part of the Farm Bill reauthorization process, the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology has scheduled a hearing tomorrow on “Broadband Loans and Grants” that are included in the bill under rural development issues.  Availability of broadband to rural communities is an important issue that NCTA and our member companies have been focused on for years, as evidenced by cable’s $185 billion investment to build broadband networks that are accessible to 93% of U.S.

Increasing Broadband Adoption

The latest Pew Internet and American Life Project report on broadband provided some fairly predictable results but ones that can still be useful in determining how we approach broadband policy issues in the coming months.

With 95% of U.S. households already having access to broadband service with download speeds of at least 4 Mbps – including 50% of homes with access to cable’s DOCSIS 3.0 speeds of 50 Mbps and faster – broadband in the U.S.

Public Policy Lunch

Today there was another public policy luncheon, with NCTA’s Dan Brenner doing a terrific job moderating a panel of stellar public servants: FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein FCC Commissioner Michael Copps FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell FTC Commissioner Jon Leibowitz NTIA Acting Assistant Secretary Meredith Baker It sounded to me like there was recognition that a discussion of net neutrality ought to include an acknowledgement of the necessity of network management.
